About
Atlanta's Bobby Ray Simmons Jr. — the rapper-producer-multi-instrumentalist who in his 2009-2012 prime was one of the most genre-fluid pop voices in the format. 'Nothin' on You' (with Bruno Mars) was a #1 in 2010; 'Airplanes' (with Hayley Williams) bridged hip-hop and pop-rock when that pairing was still a novelty; 'Strange Clouds' kept the streak alive. The Grand Hustle deal with T.I. opened the door; the post-major run got wilder (he became a flat-Earth advocate, which is its own conversation). The early catalog is genuinely better than the meme-hood suggests.
