The Screaming Eagle of Soul. Daptone Records-signed James Brown impersonator and Brooklyn cook until producer Gabe Roth put him in a recording studio at 62 and let him sing his own life — and his life, which had been brutal, came pouring out. 'No Time for Dreaming' (2011), 'Victim of Love' (2013), 'Changes' (2016) are heartbreaking, towering, late-blooming soul records — the kind of authentic 60s-soul revival nobody else has pulled off. Gone in 2017. The catalog is a gift and the Tom Petty-cover title track of 'Changes' is one of the most devastating cover versions ever recorded.
